Pupils take part in traditional Maypole dancing
May 25, 2022
Pupils at Bourton Meadow Academy brought local traditions back to life with a special dance performance this May.

A total of 90 Year 4 students gathered to take part in Maypole dancing in the town centre on May 3.
The performance marked the traditional church May Day celebrations and the pupils were trained in their routine by PE teachers at the school.
Traditional dances The Barber’s Pole, Gypsy Tent and Chrysanthemum were performed by the pupils.
School sports coach Debbie Dearlove said: "All credit must go to the children for learning the dances and performing them in front of the public. This is a tradition that we must not lose”.
Town councillor Robin Stuchbury said: “It was a privilege to be there with the Buckingham town mayor, councillors and members of the public against the backdrop of St Peter & St Paul Church to watch the children taking part in this tradition.”
In addition to the Maypole dancing, children from year two performed the country dance, I want to be near you, outside the church.
The performances were so well received that the dancers will be taking the show on the road after being requested to perform at a local old people’s home.
